2024 Youth Events
South Central Pennsylvania Young Birders Club meetings are scheduled for youth at AAS Chapter Meetings (monthly on 3rd Thursday evening from 6:30 to 7:30). There will also be additional events planned for South Central Pennsylvania Young Birders Club members and other young birders who are interested. January and February meetings are conducted online.
A parent/guardian are recommended to attend all field trips and club meetings with participants under the age of 15.

January 2025
Winter Birding at Wildwood Park
When: Sat, Jan 11, 8:00am - 10:00am
Where: 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110
Description: We will join the adults at Wildwood Park for a trip led by Rick and Peggy Price. Meet outside the Olewine Nature Center at 8:00 AM to search for year-round resident birds, visiting waterfowl and winter songbirds. At 10:00 AM those who wish may stay for “Birds and Brew” co-hosted by Wildwood Park and AAS, which consists of watching feeder birds from the comfort of the indoors with hot coffee, tea, or hot chocolate for our young birder.

Birding Messiah University, Mechanicsburg
When: Saturday, August 17, 9:00-10:30 am
Where: One College Ave., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055
Messiah University is a wonderful spot to see a variety of birds due to the range of habitats. This will be a moderate walk on a gravel path. Restrooms are available. We will meet next to the covered bridge by the parking lot and tennis courts.

Birding at Childrens Lake, Boiling Springs
When: Saturday, September 28, 9:00-10:30 am
Where: 109 Bucher Hill Rd, Boiling Springs, PA 17007
Expect to see many waterfowl during this walk. Mallards, Canada Geese, Great Blue Heron, and American and Fish Crow species are year-round residents. American Wigeon, Common Merganser, Canvasback, Gadwall, and Wood Duck are all possibilities. This is an easy walk on a gravel path. There are no restrooms on-site. We will meet in the Iron Furnace Trailhead Parking Lot.

Birding at Children's Lake

Description: This is a rescheduled walk from September. Mallards, Canada Geese, Great Blue Herons, and American and Fish Crow species are year-round residents. American Wigeon, Common Merganser, Canvasback, Gadwall, and Wood Duck are all possibilities. This is an easy walk on a gravel path. There are no restrooms on-site. We will meet at the far parking lot by the bridge.

Hawk Watch at Waggoners Gap

Where: Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch
Description: Waggoners Gap is a top hawk watch sight in Pennsylvania, bringing in over 200 Golden Eagles annually. We will be there at the height of Golden Eagle migration, so hopefully we'll get some! Also expect Northern Harriers, Sharp-Shinned Hawks, Bald Eagles, Cooper's Hawks, and other migrating passerines and falcons. Bring a jacket. A porta-potty is available on-site. Meet at the lower parking lot in front of the signs, and we will walk up as a group. Map to Waggoner's Gap Hawk Watch, Waggoners Gap Rd, Landisburg, PA 17040 for directions to the parking lot.

Description: Christmas Bird Counts are the longest-running citizen science survey, helping to track bird populations and promote their conservation. We are partnering with Wildwood Park, and Christmas Bird Count volunteers to learn about how and why we count. We will do an unofficial Christmas Bird Count along the North Boardwalk. Afterward, warm up inside the Nature Center at the Bird Viewing Area with a cup of hot chocolate. Registration is required.
