Birdseed purchases help us raise the funds we need for local education and conservation programs, including:
• Conservation camp scholarships for young people and teachers
• Outstanding monthly programs that are free and open to the public
• Birding and other nature field trips that are available for all ages and levels of experience
• Community education and outreach programs
• Important bird habitat conservation work at Trout Run.
Christmas Bird Count
The nation's longest-running community science bird project fuels Audubon's work throughout the year.
Project Feeder Watch
FeederWatch is a November-April survey of birds that visit backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America.
AAS partners with Wildwood Park for Birds and Coffee on the second Saturday, November - April.
Join us from 10–11am on the second Saturday of the month from November through April.
We will be at the bird-viewing area inside the Olewine Nature Center selling and serving bird-friendly coffee, watching birds attracted to the feeders, and recording what we see for Project Feederwatch.
SPRING AND FALL NATIVE PLANT SALE
AAS holds a Native Plant Sale at Diakon Wilderness Greenhouse every April/May and September
This Season Native Plant Sales are on September 28, 2024 & May 3, 2025.
at
The Wilderness Greenhouse, 571 Mountain Road, P.O. Box 10, Boiling Springs, PA 17007-0010
Phone: (717) 960-6740
On Saturday, September 28th, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., Appalachian Audubon Society will once again host an in-person Native Plant Sale in conjunction with Diakon Wilderness Greenhouse. Kim Patten, who manages the greenhouse, and knowledgeable Audubon volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and help you find the best plants for your yard. AAS will receive a portion of the day’s profits in support of the mission of the chapter.
When landscaping with native species, your yard, patio, or balcony becomes a vital recharge station for birds passing through and a sanctuary for nesting and overwintering birds. Growing bird-friendly plants will attract and protect the birds you love while making your space beautiful, easy to care for, and better for the environment. These plants support the insects needed by the songbirds we want to attract to our yards. Because they are adapted to growing conditions in Pennsylvania, native plants shouldn’t require fertilizer or additional water after they are established. Not sure what native plants to use? Audubon offers a database of native plants found here:
The Wilderness Greenhouse & Native Plant Nursery is a unique greenhouse that not only provides native perennials, but also serves as a vocational training site for at-risk youth. As a teaching nursery, it offers students the opportunity to learn valuable skills, gain workplace experience, and deepen their understanding of the relationships in the world around them. The Wilderness Greenhouse is at 571 Mountain Road in Boiling Springs, PA 17007.
